Full description
Thanks to this fantastic guided tour Florence Cathedral, you can admire the Florence Duomo in all its beauty, discover the wonders it hides and its most secret corners, usually closed to the public. In addition, once you reach the North Terrace of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, you will be amazed by the panorama that will open up before your eyes: Florence from above is breathtakingly beautiful and a close-up view of the Brunelleschi Dome will make the panorama even more exciting! We would like to remind you that, by participating in the tour, you can gain skip-the-line access to the Dome of Florence Cathedral, thus avoiding wasting precious time waiting for your turn.
One of our professional guides will introduce you to all the wonders of the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral in Florence, an architectural masterpiece in Gothic style characterized by a peculiar outer covering in polychrome marble. As many know, the cathedral of Florence as we see it today was built on the ruins of the ancient church of Santa Reparata: taking part in this tour, you can visit the crypt of the same name located underground, a real gem that not only contains the remains of the church construction phases, but also fragments of paintings and funerary slabs dating back to medieval and Roman times. The interior of the church is a succession of wonderful works of art, including original frescoes by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari - on the theme of the Last Judgement - that adorn the dome ceiling.
A curiosity: the wonderful polychrome marble floor of the basilica was designed by Baccio D'Agnolo and continued by his son, alongside other masters. During the restoration work that followed the disastrous flood in 1966, it was discovered that parts of marble from the unfinished façade had been used to complete the floor, after it had been demolished precisely in those years.
During the visit to the Florence dome you can admire the famous Paolo Uccello clock, one of the oldest existing mechanical watches and among the very few still functioning: the Florentine master decorated its dial that turned out to be a real work of art. The masterpiece was restored to its original splendour only forty years ago, thanks to a restoration that has reconditioned the beautiful dial and the old mechanical operation, with the hand in counter-clockwise motion completing one revolution of 24 hours starting at sunset.
Having reached this point, our guided tour of the Duomo Florence really heats up: thanks to an intricate path that crosses secret open air corridors that have remained closed to the public for centuries, you will reach the northern Terrace of the Cathedral roof. This short walk at about 32 metres above the ground will let you take a closer look at the marble decoration of the Cathedral in a picturesque setting that has remained intact for centuries. You will remain open-mouthed at the sight of the view that will unfold before your eyes, allowing you to admire the Brunelleschi Dome and the whole city from above!
The visit to the Complex and the Florence cathedral terraces will end in the 'Circular Room', accessible only with this tour, where not only will you have the opportunity to see ancient statues which originally decorated the facade of the cathedral, but you can also observe the restorers busy with their fine and precious work.
