Full description
Do you want to take a step back in time? Enjoy the charming medieval atmosphere that you can relish only in a handful of ancient villages? A visit to San Gimignano is then a must for you, the delightful village known for its many towers. It is no chance it is called the 'Medieval Manhattan'! Are you curious to learn how many towers in San Gimignano are still standing after the glories of the Middle Ages? Finding out is very simple: book our private tour of San Gimignano and you will have the opportunity to ask the guides who will accompany you these and many other questions. Our tour of San Gimignano will last about an hour and a half and will allow you to take in and appreciate the architectural and artistic wonders as well as the anecdotes and the most interesting facts of San Gimignano. What’s more, Gimignano is situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Tuscany, among the beautiful hills north of Siena overlooking Val d'Elsa. In short, towers and buildings are not the only thing to admire in San Gimignano but, now and then, you will enjoy wonderful sceneries of the famous Tuscan hills. And if after feeling stunned by the amazing views you also want to delight your palate, you should know that on request there are various tasting options to choose from at the delightful little restaurants in the center of San Gimignano. And considering this is Vernaccia terroir, the delicious white wine produced since 1200, if I were you I would make the most of it! Still upon request you can also add transport to San Gimignano on the most suitable vehicle for your group but always maximum comfort.
Our San Gimignano private tour is the perfect way to see and discover a long list of interesting attractions. Where will you start from? The meeting point with your guides will be at San Gimignano Porta San Giovanni, the most beautiful and majestic in San Gimignano. Here is where pilgrims arriving from Siena along the Via Francigena would approach Gimignano. You will admire the nearby Romanesque Church of the Convent of Saint Francis of Assisi, which was an important shelter for pilgrims. You will continue to the heart of the historic center of San Gimignano along the main street that takes its name from the gate: Via S. Giovanni. Piazza della Cisterna in San Gimignano is certainly one of the most emblematic places of this iconic village. It was its heart, the space dedicated to people and events including celebrations, tournaments and public entertainment. Even today it is always bustling with the constant presence of happy tourists who stop by the well for a de-rigueur snapshot. You will certainly not be able to refrain from doing the same! On the northern side of this beautiful square is also one of the most famous towers of San Gimignano: Torre del Diavolo. And as expected ... when we talk about the devil inevitably mysterious stories and scary legends abound. Will you have the guts to hear some of them? After the legends narrated by the guides, provided you are not too scared, you will head to the other great focal point of the village: San Gimignano Square where San Gimignano Cathedral and the Palazzo Comunale are located, also known as the 'twin towers'. From the Palazzo Comunale you will then reach San Gimignano Museum with its many works of art, Sala Dante and its marvelous frescoes with a chivalric theme and Torre Grossa. It is the highest one and you can climb up to its very top: from here you will enjoy a truly unforgettable view. On a very clear day, you can see the Apuan Alps and also Mount Amiata. One of the best known and valued buildings in the historic center of San Gimignano is definitely the Cathedral of San Gimignano. It is known as San Gimignano Collegiate Church, a marvelous example of Tuscan Romanesque style. Inside you will be literally enraptured by the beauty of the frescoes that completely adorn the naves.
And then, what should you do in San Gimignano after you have visited the whole village, wandered along its picturesque alleys and maybe indulged in a spell of shopping? It might be a good idea to visit some of the museums in San Gimignano, there really is something for everyone, from the most classic to the most particular. Some examples? The Town Museum of San Gimignano is actually a collection of different exhibition locations which can be accessed with a single ticket: Pinacoteca, Torre Grossa of San Gimignano, Archaeological museum, Spezieria di Santa Fina, Contemporary Art Gallery. If you are after something a bit stronger, then why not try the Torture Museum in San Gimignano? You will embark on an interesting but certainly disturbing journey in one of the darkest and most frightening sides of the Middle Ages.
What do you think then, are San Gimignano and its highlights worth a visit? No doubt you cannot wait to discover the mysteries of the Devil Tower in San Gimignano, walk on the travertine of Piazza della Cisterna in San Gimignano and drink a nice glass of Vernaccia! So what are you waiting for? Book our guided tour in San Gimignano and this wonderful medieval dream will become reality.
