Full description

If you are visiting Tuscany, our private tour of Montepulciano is an experience that you absolutely cannot miss. Indulge yourself in the discovery of the enchanting pearl of the 1500s where the best artists of the Renaissance worked. Let our expert guides guide you to explore a wonderful place where time seems to have stopped. Montepulciano is certainly one of Tuscany’s most beautiful towns. Perched on a hill between Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana a few kilometers from Siena, Montepulciano is an enchanting village where sumptuous Renaissance palaces and ancient churches are intersected by quaint alleyways just waiting to be discovered. Equally mesmerizing are the wonderful views of the charming Tuscan countryside unfolding from behind an arched door or a panoramic terrace: hills dotted with cypress trees and farmhouses with colours that change according to the season, olive groves as far as the eye can see and the ever present rows of vines. This is exactly where one of the most famous wines of Tuscany is produced, one of Italy’s best produce famous all over the world: Nobile di Montepulciano. During your holiday in Tuscany, you should definitely visit this delightful village and our private tour is without any doubt the best way to do it. Our guides will accompany your group to discover this wonderful pearl and will entertain you with their stories on the history, traditions and anecdotes of Montepulciano. To make your visit even more delightful, there will be a tasteful ending to your experience: a relaxed tasting in a local wine cellar! But that’s not all: on request we can also arrange transport from other locations, with different vehicles depending on the number of participants, but always with the highest comfort guaranteed.

But let's get back to the beauties of Montepulciano. Did you know that because of its charm, many directors have chosen it as the location of their films? Some examples? The most famous in recent years is surely ‘New Moon’ the sequel to ‘Twilight’, the vampire saga based on Stephanie Meyer’s books. Some of the scenes of the new fiction series ‘The Medici. Masters of Florence’ will also be shot in Montepulciano. We are sure you don’t want to miss out on the chance to tread these same locations during your walk in Montepulciano, do you?

Surely one of the sights you will visit is Piazza Grande, the beating heart of the town where great architects such as Antonio da Sangallo il Vecchio, Michelozzo Michelozzi and Ippolito Scalza have worked. Among the buildings overlooking the large cobbled square is the Palazzo Comunale, which is very similar to Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza della Signoria. You surely noticed it. It has the same structure, the same battlements and even a similar tower. At certain times of the year, it is also possible to climb the tower, a fantastic experience since from its summit you will definitely feel like you are on top of the world. Now, if this sounds a bit farfetched to you, saying that from its top you will see most of Tuscany and even beyond is not an exaggeration! On a clear day, the views will take in Mount Cimone, the peaks of Gran Sasso, Perugia, Subasio, the towers of Siena, the Apennines and Lake Trasimeno. However, if you don’t fancy climbing to the top, the Piazza will still delight you with other beautiful sights, such as Palazzo Contucci, Palazzo Nobili-Tarugi and Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo in front of which is Pozzo dè Grifi and Leoni. The religious center of the square is the imposing building of the Cathedral of the Assumption, characterized by an unfinished facade: it houses many important works such as the triptych of Siena-based Taddeo di Bartolo. The square is also the location where important cultural and folk events take place. ‘Cantiere D'Arte Internazionale’ belongs to the first type. During the month of July, its rich program headlines dance and theatre shows, concerts, readings and exhibitions. The highlight of folklore in Montepulciano is, instead, the 'Bravio delle botti' that takes place in August: the districts compete in a fun race where barrels are pushed along the streets of the town.

Although it is the center of the town, there is more to Montepulciano than Piazza Grande! In fact, if you did not feel like climbing to the top of the tower, scattered around the village are several panoramic viewpoints from which you can enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. True picture-postcard views to be captured with cameras and smartphones and kept as a wonderful memory of your visit to Montepulciano. Our guides will also accompany you along the stylish Corso, the sixteenth century street lined with elegant buildings and the fourteenth-century Church of St. Agostino whose façade was designed by Michelozzo. In the square of the same name as the architect is the Torre di Pulcinella with the Neapolitan mask striking the hour. During your walk in Montepulciano you will also walk along Via Ricci, Montepulciano’s shopping center, where, in addition to more beautiful buildings, there are also many cellars that testify to the special bond between this delightful village and the wine making tradition. It is no coincidence that Nobile di Montepulciano was the first wine to receive the DOGC certification. Apart from this piece of information, the wine of Montepulciano is one of Italy’s best world-renowned produce. This famous red wine, with a strong character, intense and floral aroma and a dry and persistent flavour, is the pride of Montepulciano! If you want to try it you can add a pleasant tasting to the tour: you will have the opportunity to taste the highly-rated Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG but also Rosso di Montepulciano and Vinsanto. They will be paired with tantalizing traditional Tuscan delicacies such as cold meats and local cheeses.

What else to ask for? Our private tour will reveal to you the charming Renaissance beauty of Montepulciano, its fantastic views, the fascinating stories and anecdotes of our guides and, if you feel like it, you can also treat yourself to a good glass of wine. The ingredients to enjoy your getaway are all there ... just come along!
