Classical music and dance fans, we have a surprise for you: the chance to buy tickets for the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the extraordinary event which takes place every year from May to July in the Tuscan capital and which attracts thousands of spectators from all over the world.
Founded in the distant 1933 at the behest of the patron Luigi Ridolfi Vay da Verrazzano, at the time 'Florence Federal’, the Festival of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino has become one of the most prestigious Italian artistic events, and what’s more, with each edition, the program has been enriched by world-renowned masters and artists.
Since 2001, the most important shows are held at the Opera di Firenze, located near the Cascine Park and the Leopolda Station. The hall, which enjoys excellent acoustics, is the official theater of the Maggio Fiorentino. We would like to remind you that, in addition to this location, the event includes concerts in other areas of the historic center and, coinciding with 'Maggio Metropolitano', even in other places in Tuscany, such as Impruneta, Scandicci and Sesto Fiorentino.
But let's get back to the 2018 edition of the Maggio Fiorentino: the first addition to point out is certainly the new artistic direction that sees at the helm, from this year until 2023, the great master Fabio Luisi. His predecessor, Maestro Zubin Mehta, will remain in Florence as he was awarded the title 'Emeritus Chief Editor for Life', precisely because of the talent and professionalism shown in these years.
The second piece of news concerns 'Carmen', the famous work by Georges Bizet which, in the 2018 edition of the Maggio Fiorentino, will present a decidedly original setting. The decision has been taken to showcase in Florence 'Carmen does not die', where the protagonist, unlike the original composition, will not be killed by Don Jose. A brave choice, to launch a clear message of art against femicide.
But what are the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino performances on the bill for this year? There is a packed program, so below you will find only some of the most anticipated events. If you want to browse THE COMPLETE PROGRAM OF THE MAGGIO FIORENTINO 2018, click here!
- Giuseppe Verdi’s Trilogy is a must: the extraordinary Maggio Fiorentino Orchestra, under the careful wand of the master Luisi, will perform the famous musics of 'Il Trovatore', 'Il Rigoletto' and 'La Traviata'.
- Great expectations also for the concert of the conductor Fabio Luisi who, on Tuesday 29 May, will present to the general public "Paulus" by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, inspired by the events of the life of Paolo di Tarsi narrated in the Acts of the Apostles, starting with the martyrdom of Saint Stephen until the time of his death.
- Still in keeping with symphonic music, the concerts dedicated to the Sostakovic Cycle continue with five events: John Axelrod on 24 May, Mikhail Jurowski on 7 June, James Conlon on 10 June and, last but not least, Zubin Mehta on 28 and 30 June. In Florence, the 2018 opera season is paying homage to the great composer Leonard Bernstein on the centenary of his birth: the first part of the concert on 24 May directed by John Axelrod, will be Bernstein’s Symphony no. 2 for piano and orchestra, entitled 'The age of Anxiety'.
- As regards the world of 'operas' at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the 2018 program proposes an unmissable concert dedicated to Macbeth, directed by maestro Riccardo Muti, who this year celebrates the 50th anniversary of his debut in Florence. The famous work by William Shakespeare awaits you at the Opera House on 11 and 13 July.
As already mentioned, this is just a taste of the Opera Fiorentina program for this edition of the Maggio Fiorentino. We also remind you that, as usual, some events will be located in other locations not far from Florence.
