The exceptional collection of the Palazzo Pitti Palatine Gallery includes paintings and works of art from the late Renaissance to the Baroque era and is considered one of the most important examples of 'picture gallery' in Italy: unlike modern museums, the paintings are displayed following purely a decorative and not chronological order. The paintings and their sumptuous frames cover the entire surface of the walls and are arranged in symmetrical patterns that reflect the tradition of the collections of the 17th century and, in particular, the set up that was originally created by the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo between the 18th and the 19th century.
