Full description
Take some time to get away from the traffic of the city and immerse yourself in the breathtaking views that only Val d'Orcia,Tuscany, can offer ... Located in the heart of Tuscany, this area is a perfect union between man and nature: it is this interaction that , in 2004, led UNESCO to enlist Val d'Orcia Park as a World Heritage Site.
By taking part in our tour 'Flavors of Val d'Orcia' you will discover the artistic and food and wine gems of this enchanting area and be mesmerized by the views unfolding before your eyes: crop fields, colourful vineyards and pasture lands harmoniously intertwined with tucked-away cottages accessed along unpaved roads lined by rows of cypress trees.
What to see in Val d'Orcia? By participating in our excursion, you will visit some of the most beautiful Val d'Orcia towns - Montalcino, Pienza and Montepulciano – and combine them with a tasting of Montepulciano wine and the famous pecorino Pienza cheese. But let’s take one thing at a time.
After meeting your guide, you will leave Florence on a comfortable Gran Turismo coach heading for Montalcino, a charming Val Dorcia medieval village surrounded by majestic city walls and dominated by the ancient fortress built in 1361 almost as a symbolic evidence of the passage of the city under the ruling of the city of Siena. Perfectly preserved since its construction, the Fortress is nowadays often the venue of choice for major events and concerts, such as the yearly 'Jazz & Wine Festival' in July.
You will start with a visit to a celebrated winery where you will deservedly enjoy a tasting of Brunello, a renowned wine produced in the area and appreciated all over the world for its qualities. You will then walk to the top of the village where, we have no doubt, you will be left speechless in front of the magnificent picture-postcard view embracing sun-dappled hills peppered with red and yellow flowers, ancient oak trees and picturesque vineyards!
Continuing our tour of Val d'Orcia, you will then visit Pienza, a small town, perched on a hilltop on a commanding position over the valley below. Known as the "Ideal City" of the Renaissance, Pienza was the brainchild of the great humanist Enea Silvio Piccolomini. After he became Pope Pius II in 1458, he decided to transform Corsignano, his small native town, into a great utopian city that embodied the principles of the Italian Renaissance. And so, in just four years, following a design by Bernardo Rossellino, who trained under the great architect Leon Battista Alberti, a complex of splendid palaces was built: the Cathedral, Palazzo Piccolomini, the City Hall and the magnificent Piazza Centrale. Precisely for its renaissance urban canons and the arrangements of perspectives, Pienza was enlisted in the Unesco World Heritage in 1966. You will enjoy some free time to explore the historic center and its pretty narrow streets, in addition to tasting Pecorino Pienza, one of the best-known local delicacies that should not be missing from any Val d’Orcia tour.
The final part of the itinerary will include a Montepulciano tour, a beautiful medieval village set among verdant hills, vineyards and sun-drenched fields. Surrounded by majestic ancient walls, it is crossed by only one main street, called Corso, from which alleys and squares depart: in the historic center you can still admire sumptuous buildings and beautiful palaces, bearing witness to the glory that the town enjoyed during the 16th century under the ruling of the Medici Family. Having said that, do you know what the village of Montepulciano owes its fame to? Clearly, to Montepuciano red wine! This is in fact where the Montepulciano Nobile Wine is produced, a red DOCG (Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin) known around the world, whose unique qualities you will have the opportunity to taste by taking part in our tour. You will then visit a typical cellar and its 'secret rooms', hidden away underneath the ancient walls, where Montepulciano wine is preserved.
One interesting fact. The village of Montepulciano has recently come under the spotlight as it was chosen as the location of some of the scenes from the movie 'New Moon', the second chapter of the 'Twilight' saga.
