Richard Ginori ceramics: a typical Tuscan story
The surname Ginori is known worldwide as a synonym of style, class and elegance. Do you know where the first factory producing this company’s ceramics was located? In Doccia, a small fraction of the Municipality of Pontassieve in the province of Florence. Richard Ginori is indeed another priceless figure of Tuscan heritage.
It all began back in 1735 when the Marquis Ginori began producing ceramics in what was then called Manifattura Doccia. Back then, they created statues, which soon turned the company into one of the most important brands in the sector.
In the 1800s Doccia porcelain began to invade the noble palaces and it was then that the famous stoia motif (which reproduces the weaving of fabric) was born, a motif which would characterize its wonderful porcelain dishes for a long time.
The real turning point for this great Made in Italy company, which had in the meantime become the Ceramic Company Richard Ginori, was the arrival of the architect Gio’ Ponti, art director from 1923 to 1930, who brought fresh ideas with his creations combining tradition with avant-garde. Although his contribution still remains among the most important and memorable of the company, from then on there were lots of artists who offered their inspiration to Richard Ginori.
And today? It’s enough to mention that in December 2019 the company was awarded the Tableware International Awards of Excellence for its ‘Totem’ collection, a wonderful collection inspired by the eighteenth-century decorative tradition, with a contemporary twist of bright colors. Pieces can be personalized with a quote, a sentence or a memory, making each piece truly unique. What else to add…. a story that began 284 years ago still has many chapters yet to be written. How about taking a trip to Florence and visiting the Richard Ginori Museum? Relive this story through its wonderful ceramics on display. Since you’re there it’s worth visiting the city, and 'Your Own Florence' is the perfect tour: choose the date, time and itinerary of your guided tour that best suits your needs.
