From 25-28 April 2019 the charming village of San Quirico D'Orcia in Tuscany (SI) hosts 'Orcia Wine Festival 2018': an event dedicated to the promotion of Orcia’s wine production, an excellence of this marvellous area. If you are planning a spring weekend in Tuscany, Val D'Orcia is the perfect destination for you. Its gentle hills colored in the most vivid green are the best of the Tuscan landscape. It’s no coincidence it has been enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004. The food and wine event we have to offer, which is one of the most popular events in Val D’Orcia among tourists and enthusiasts of the sector, will add something extra to your Tuscan stay: the chance to discover, taste and buy the wines and typical products of this area full of excellences. ‘Francigena di Vino' is the theme representing the common thread of the various events of this edition. The ancient pilgrim journey will ideally combine the different experiences: the religious pilgrimage will become a ‘food and wine pilgrimage’ with visits to the wineries of Orcia on board transport means ranging bikes to steam trains. Nice idea, right? Well then, let us tell you everything you need to know to best enjoy this unmissable experience in the heart of Tuscany.

THE EVENT. It is organized by the Municipality of San Quirico D'Orcia, the Consorzio del Vino Orcia in collaboration with ONAV Siena (National Organization of Wine Tasters). It is a market exhibition that was born with the aim of enhancing the Orcia DOC. It offers professionals, operators, enthusiasts and tourists the chance to find out more and appreciate this excellent Orcia valley wine. The various events will involve first of all San Quirico (Tuscany), an ancient village with beautiful buildings and picturesque streets, as well as the charming spa of Bagno Vignoni, and some of the Val D'Orcia wineries. You will get a real full immersion in Tuscan flavours, making your stay in Tuscany truly unforgettable.

THE WINE. The denomination vino DOC Orcia was born exactly on February 14th 2000 and includes wines made from red grapes with a minimum 60% of Sangiovese and Orcia (at least 90% of this grape variety). The denomination includes white, rosé and vin Santo wine. The Val D'Orcia wine production area includes 12 towns in Val D'Orcia located in the hills of southern Tuscany (Buonconvento, Castiglione d'Orcia, Pienza, Radicofani, Trequanda, Abbadia San Salvatore, Chianciano Terme, Montalcino, San Casiano dei Bagni, Sarteano and Torrita di Siena). As Donatelli Cinelli Colombini tells us - president of the Consorzio Vino Orcia -, the wine promoted by the Orcia wine festival is a product that comes from the history of families who have always lived surrounded by their vineyards, families that have combined respect for nature and tradition with excellent oenology and viticulture skills.

DISCOVER, TASTE, BUY. The exhibition market, which represents the focal point of what has now become one of the most famous Val D'Orcia events, will be housed in San Quirico at Palazzo Chigi, the beautiful baroque building admirably renovated in recent years. It will be open from 25-28 April from 12.00 to 19.00, while on the 26th from 15.00 to 19.00 it will be open only to visitors from the wine sector. During the market exhibition a tasting area will be available where you can taste wines and typical products of Val D'Orcia. There are so many production centres in this area that offer quality products that you will be spoiled for choice. Val d'Orcia olive oil is an example of these excellences, but so are white truffles, the Cinta Senese salami, Chianina meat of the enormous white oxen typical of the Tuscan countryside, saffron and excellent cheeses from the nearby Pienza. In the wonderful eighteenth-century halls of the building you can also participate in guided tastings and receive all the information you need to visit the best Val D'Orcia wineries. These are 40 companies associated with the consortium that, on this occasion, open their doors to enthusiasts and tourists. 26 April is when the event 'A veglia con il produttore’ will take place, during which you can meet the producers and listen to the stories of their farms. During the wine festival, the restaurants in the area will offer original tasty combinations of traditional Val d'Orcia products and good wine. Given the theme of this year, Via Francigena will be one of the important points of this event and consequently trekking and cycling routes will be set up. Still on bicycles, you will be able to visit the cellars and, if this takes your fancy, you can travel from Siena on a fantastic steam train. In the evening at the Palazzo Chigi theater, there will be opera concerts and exciting live music in the streets of the town centre.

ORCIA WINE FESTIVAL FOR KIDS If you plan on attending the Orcia event with your children, bear in mind that the organizers have something planned. From the age of 5, while you venture into the Orcia wine tastings, they will be able to participate in various workshops designed specifically for them. When? 25 April from 15.00 to 17.00 and on 26, 27 and 28 April from 12.00 to 13.00.

The full program of the Val D’Orcia Event with information on tickets and reservations, timetables and a list of restaurants and wineries participating in the initiative, is available on the institutional website of the event where you will also find the latest news on the event in Orcia. We are sure that this event is a very special occasion to visit one of the most evocative areas of Tuscany. Therefore, we would like to give you one last piece of advice so that your experience can be truly unique: book, together with your travel companions or your family, our ‘Tour to discover the flavours of Val d’Orcia with departure from Florence. A truly exceptional way to discover two of the most fascinating villages in Val D'Orcia, their artistic gems and their history.
